People have been carving Jack O Lanterns for many centuries. There is quite an interesting legend behind it but it basically boils down to that the Jack O Lanterns were used to scare the evil spirits away.

Most people think pumpkins have always been used in making Jack O Lanterns but actually they have been used for only a few hundred years. In Europe, Jack O Lanterns were carved from turnips or potatoes.

Pumpkins actually originated in North America. Probably Mexico. They have been grown in America for over 5,000 years. But now they are grown in almost every continent.  The only continent they aren’t grown in is Antartica. 80% of pumpkins are harvested and used in October. Wonder why???

American Indians used pumpkins not only just for food, but also as medicine. I’d love to know how they were used as medicine.
