Dog Safety During Halloween
Keep your Dog Safe during Halloween

We want our dogs to have a great Halloween. And we want to keep them safe. Halloween is a jovial, fun time for the whole family. And we want our pup to join in the festivities. There are several things to be aware of to make sure your dog has a great Halloween too.
Try to make sure your dog’s costume is comfortable. Masks are not recommended for dogs as it impairs their vision.
It goes without saying to keep your dog on a leash if you will be taking him out. Even the best behaved dogs can become frightened and confused and get separated from you or run off.
If you take your dog out trick or treating, watch how he reacts to children around him wearing costumes. Some dogs become frightened by all the strange sights and activities. If your dog shows signs of distress, take him home immediately. You wouldn’t want him to bite a child, or run away in fright.
Keep Halloween decorations out of the reach of your dog. Lighted pumpkins can be a hazard for little paws.
If you will be in for the evening, when the trick or treaters come to your door, it’s a good idea to keep your dog in another room so he won’t run out.
Keep Halloween candy away from your dog. Chocolate is deadly for dogs and sugar in general isn’t good for them.
If you will be away for the evening, keep the television or radio on to help soften all the loud noises outside.
It’s also best to keep your outside dogs inside on Halloween. Pranksters have been known to play dirty tricks (or sometimes worse) on neighborhood pets on Halloween.
Keep these guidelines in mind and you and your dog will have a fun, festive and safe Halloween.

Hey, great idea for a website! We always struggle with our pets during Halloween when it comes to decide how we’ll dress them – at least I’ll know where to come to sort out my dogs outfit this year! Thanks!

Well highlighted, we can have great fun with our pets but we must remember they cant tell us if they like it or not, and with the firework celebrations in nov in some parts of the world we must remember to keep them safe.

Some good tips here, especially the turning the tv on idea. Sometimes we tend to forget about our pooches feelings when we are all wrapped up in the kids and trick-or-treating. We have to treat our 2 dogs differently – our big guy loves all the commotion and excitement at Halloween, but our little girl gets nervous and very uncertain, so we have to keep her away in a quiet room where she is more comfortable. Dogs are just like people in the sense that they all have different personalities and we need to be sensitive to their individual needs.

This is actually more valuable information than many people realize. There are more and more pet related Halloween costumes coming out and many of them are not functional or not completely designed with the pet in mind. By taking into consideration some of the things you point out, everyone including your pet, is likely to have a more enjoyable Halloween.

I have found that regularly sitting at the door step with your puppy as the trick or treaters come and go works wonders for them as they grow up. It works at christmas too with carol singers. Anyway which dog wont enjoy a treat a gift at christmas or halloween for been good watching all the strangers come and go. Dont reward him or her for barking though, nothing more annoying that a barking dog while your trying to listen to the carol singers at the doorstep.

Holloween is great for kids, pets and adults but what people tend to forget it the amount of fur you pet has, with additional clothing on top. If you are going to dress up your pooch this halloween try to get something thin that they can move about easily in. It your dog doesnt seem happy take it off!
We have had Alaskan Malamutes for 8 years now and we have found the time of your to be most worried about is bonfire night. We found that playing a music CD of fireworks for an hour a week helps them get used to the noise.

Hey! Thanks for including information about dog safety here. We can get so carried away with the fun of the holiday, that basics like keeping our dogs away from the chocolate are overlooked.
Thanks again!

When dressing up your dog for Halloween I agree that safety should be your first concern. Too often owners put their pets in costumes that block their vision, making it extremely dangerous for them to even go outside!

Halloween is a great time to enjoy the kids and to let the family pet have a little fun too! I’ve heard more comments on my dogs costume that the kids. Really funny to see the reactions. Just make sure your pet is properly trained to go out into the public. There are alot of people walking around. You want to make sure you protect yourself and others.
Good Post, thanks.
